Siding Installation, Replacement, and Painting in Newton

Most siding projects in Newton fall into one of three categories: a full installation, a replacement when the old walls give out, or a repaint to refresh the exterior. Explore our siding services.

    Siding installation

    Siding installation

House wrap, flashing, and proper wall preparation come first, then panels are installed to manufacturer specifications – James Hardie, wood, vinyl, and more.
    Siding replacement

    Siding replacement

We pull the failing clapboard or vinyl, inspect the sheathing underneath, and repair any rot or water damage before new panels go on. That is what makes siding replacement in Newton hold up through our freeze-thaw winters.
    Siding painting

    Siding painting

Not every home needs a tear-off. When the boards are still sound, we scrape, prime, and repaint older Newton homes using lead-safe work practices, so your exterior looks fresh without a full rebuild.
    Siding Materials
    Siding Materials for Newton Homes

Materials that hold up to New England freeze-thaw cycles. Choosing siding in Newton comes down to how a material handles freeze-thaw cycles, wind-driven rain, and the amount of upkeep you want. Here are six options we install, with the trade-offs that actually matter on a Newton home

    Vinyl siding
    Vinyl siding

The budget-friendly workhorse. Vinyl comes in dozens of colors and textures, from smooth clapboard to shake profiles, never needs painting, and shrugs off rain and snow. A practical pick for Newton colonials and capes on a set budget.

    Fiber cement siding

Made from sand, cement, and cellulose, fiber cement holds paint for years and resists moisture, fire, and insects. Its dense construction helps it perform well through repeated freeze-thaw cycles, and James Hardie planks exhibit convincing wood grain up close.

    Fiber cement siding
      Composite siding
    Composite siding

Composite siding uses engineered materials designed to resist moisture, warping, and everyday weather exposure. Factory finishes stay color-true through sun and snow, and a yearly rinse is usually all the upkeep it asks for.

    Wood siding

Wood siding remains a go-to choice for homeowners who love the warmth and character of a natural exterior. Cedar shakes, shingles, and traditional clapboard siding create the classic New England look found on many older and historic homes.

    Wood siding
    ACRE siding
    ACRE siding

ACRE siding gives homeowners the natural look of wood without the maintenance concerns associated with traditional lumber. At the same time, it is designed to withstand moisture and resist rot, making it a smart choice for homeowners who want a wood-inspired exterior with easier upkeep.

    Boral / TruExterior siding

Boral and TruExterior siding are popular choices for homeowners seeking durability and greater design flexibility. These materials hold up well against moisture and changing weather while allowing for detailed profiles, trim work, and traditional architectural styles.

Where We Install Siding in Newton

How we approach each type of Newton property. Newton’s housing stock runs from 1890s Victorians in protected districts to postwar ranches and small mixed-use buildings. Each one gets its own plan for approvals, prep, and scheduling – the same approach our siding contractors in Needham bring next door.

    Older Colonials and Victorians

    Older Colonials and Victorians

Homes in Newton’s historic districts come with review boards and original detail worth saving. We document existing trim and profile lines, follow lead-safe work practices, and handle the commission paperwork so approvals don’t stall the job.
    Mid-Century and Postwar Homes

    Mid-Century and Postwar Homes

Ranches, capes, and split-levels around Newton Highlands and Oak Hill often hide soft sheathing behind the old wall. We open it up, repair what’s underneath, and rework flashing at the dormers and additions these houses tend to have.
    Small Commercial and Multi-Family Buildings

    Small Commercial and Multi-Family Buildings

Two-families, condo associations, and small storefronts need a schedule that respects tenants and business hours. We stage work elevation by elevation, keep entries and parking clear, and give the board or owner one point of contact.

We had a great experience with Plum Pro overall. Yuk was very professional and well-organized while working with us on a proposal and contract to fix our deck after it was severely damaged by a fallen tree. He set us up with an accelerated timeline to help us coordinate this project with some of our other repairs, and aside from some weather delays stuck to it pretty well overall.

We could not have asked for a better team than Plum ProExteriors for our siding and window project. From start to finish, the process went smoothly. At our initial meeting, Yuk did a great job of explaining all of the different options available for our project. He then provided us with a very detailed estimate that gave us the confidence that there would not be any hidden/surprise costs/fees, which there were not. Once the contract was signed, Yuk did a great job of communicating when the project would start.

Yuk and the crew at Plum ProExteriors did an excellent job installing 7 Pella Architectural double-hung windows in my 1911 Dutch Colonial. Prior to providing a proposal, Yuk measured not once but twice to ensure the windows fit perfectly. Two of three windows were part of a bay window where the frames were no longer perfectly square. None the less, the crew got the windows to fit without issue. They finished with caulking any gaps inside and out for all the windows and finished the job in one day. The crew was clean and neat and even took away the old storm window frames. I already have received compliments on how well the windows look. Their price was fair and I would definitely hire Plum ProExteriors again. Thanks guys!

Yuk is definitely an A+. I felt very comfortable with him and trusted throughout the entire process. We ran into a few issues along the way and that’s to be expected, but Yuk was always available and made good on his promises. If I had to criticize one thing it would be that he doesn’t have a great carpenter for interior finish work, but in fairness he did make me aware that this was not something his crew normally does. Love the end product and the neighbors do too!

We have a full house of windows to replace and we are so happy we found Yuk thanks to a recommendation on a local Facebook group. Yuk quoted the entire job and was transparent in his pricing. Yuk was patient walking us through the process and updating quotes when we decided to start only with the largest and least efficient windows.

I hired Plum ProExteriors based on the quality of work I saw when I came across a renovation project they were doing in the area. I had roof, windows, doors, siding and decking done.I was very impressed with the depth of knowledge Yuk has in his trade. Communication was excellent. He kept me updated on the progress when I wasn’t there. Yuk and his crew worked efficiently and more importantly the quality of work was exceptional.

Common Questions About Siding in Newton

What drives the cost of a siding replacement in Newton?

Home size and number of stories, the material you pick, trim and window detailing, and whether we find rot or failing sheathing at tear-off. Historic-district homes often need matched profiles, which adds labor. An on-site estimate prices your exact house.

Do I need a permit for siding replacement in Newton?

Yes. Newton’s building department requires a permit for siding work, and homes in a local historic district need extra design review. Houses built before 1978 also call for lead-safe work practices. We pull the permit and coordinate the inspections.

What siding material is best for New England weather?

There is no single winner. Fiber cement, composite, and other engineered siding options perform well through freeze-thaw cycles and wind-driven rain, while insulated vinyl offers a lower-maintenance option.

Does new siding improve energy efficiency and lower utility bills?

It can. Most of the gain comes from what goes behind the panels – fresh house wrap, sealed gaps around windows, and insulated backing that stops drafts through tired sheathing. Siding swapped without air-sealing delivers far fewer savings.

Can a siding project be phased to fit my budget?

Often, yes. Some Newton homeowners start with the most weather-beaten elevation and finish the rest in a later season, or choose a mid-range material with the same protective detailing. We price the options side by side so you can compare.

What affects the schedule of a siding installation in Newton?

House size, material lead times, permit review, New England weather, and any rot uncovered once the old siding comes off. We set a realistic window before the crew arrives and tell you right away if conditions on site change it.
