    Our Siding Underlayment Services

Siding underlayment protects a home’s exterior against moisture intrusion, draft, hidden mold growth, and energy loss. In Massachusetts and New England, buildings are constantly exposed to freeze-thaw cycles, heavy precipitation, and high winds. Fanfold products, therefore, remain a prime go-to option due to their lightweight design, fast installation, and added insulation value.

    Insulation board installation
    Insulation board installation
Underlayment for vinyl siding is commonly installed during new construction and full re-siding projects to update the exterior and improve moisture protection. Underlayment for vinyl siding typically involves house wrap or installing rigid insulation boards, followed by seam sealing, ventilation gap inspection, and the creation of a continuous moisture barrier underneath the siding. To мmaximize long-term weather resistance and energy efficiency, when installing building wrap, we place emphasis on correct overlap and professionally sealed seams.
    Underlayment replacement & retrofit
    Underlayment replacement & retrofit
Siding underlayment is key to properly restoring older homes found across Massachusetts and New England. Our professionals often discover deteriorated, inadequate, or missing layers over the course of such projects. Retrofitting a modern moisture barrier provides long-term protection against water intrusion, structural decay, and water damage mold that can develop inside exterior walls over time.
    Inspection & moisture assessment
    Inspection & moisture assessment
Deterioration of the underlayment often goes unnoticed until leaks occur or the facade begins to warp. A professional siding underlayment inspection identifies gaps, tears, improper laps, trapped moisture, and other hidden vulnerabilities before they compromise the integrity of the entire structure and lead to costly repairs. This service is especially relevant for those who deal with recurring moisture-related issues or wish to sell a property.
    Types
    Types of siding underlayment materials

Massachusetts homes ought to endure heavy snow, ice dams, severe winds, intense precipitation, and humid summers. Conditions like these make the choice of underlayment and long-term exterior protection non-optional. We select siding underlayment based on the type of siding, local climate conditions, energy waste goals, and overall project budget.

    House wrap (weather-resistant barrier)
    House wrap (weather-resistant barrier)
Building wrap materials create an additional weather-resistant layer between the sheathing and exterior cladding. House wrap installation remains a standard underlayment solution for vinyl siding, fiber cement, and engineered wood. House wraps create a breathable barrier that blocks wind and bulk water, which allows vapor to escape. Praised for their durability and moisture management performance, premium products such as Tyvek are widely used across Massachusetts. Products by Tyvek, Barricade, Benjamin Obdyke SA, James Hardie, and Bluesking are examples of affordable, energy-efficient, and versatile technology renowned for its hassle-free installation. Vinyl siding underlayment produces a smoother installation surface for new siding and enhances the long-term durability of the exterior cladding.
    Fanfold foam underlayment
    Fanfold foam underlayment
Fanfold siding underlayment systems typically use lightweight XPS or EPS (by Polar Industries, for example) foam panels installed over existing siding during re-siding projects to achieve a flat nailing surface and additional insulation value, usually ranging from R-2 to R-3. Fanfold insulation boards improve the thermal performance of older Massachusetts homes and keep wall thickness within optimal limits. Overall, fanfold underlayment provides meaningful additional insulation value in the restoration of older properties.
    Extruded polystyrene (XPS) rigid board
    Extruded polystyrene (XPS) rigid board
Siding underlayment insulation solutions reduce thermal bridging and improve a home’s overall energy efficiency during harsh Massachusetts and New England winters. Extruded polystyrene rigid boards achieve higher R-values compared to thinner foam underlayment products (consider brands such as R-Max, Owens, etc.). They are often installed as a continuous insulation layer to support modern Massachusetts energy code requirements.
    Drainable housewrap & rainscreen
    Drainable housewrap & rainscreen
Waterproof siding underlayment products provide additional protection against wind-driven precipitation, trapped moisture, and prolonged humidity exposure. Premium drainable house wrap systems incorporate built-in drainage channels or air gaps that promote faster drying behind the siding. Rainscreen assemblies enhance long-term moisture management for fiber cement and engineered wood exteriors. The best underlayment for Hardie siding usually consists in professionally installing drainable barrier systems designed for continuous drainage and ventilation.
    Cedar shake & shingle underlayment
    Cedar shake & shingle underlayment
Cedar shingle siding underlayment requires breathable vapor-permeable membranes that prevent condensation build-up and allow moisture to escape. Many cedar shake siding underlayment assemblies incorporate felt interlays and other modern breathable materials to improve ventilation and reduce condensation buildup. This solution comes in handy when a key objective is to avert premature rot and structural deterioration.

We had a great experience with Plum Pro overall. Yuk was very professional and well-organized while working with us on a proposal and contract to fix our deck after it was severely damaged by a fallen tree. He set us up with an accelerated timeline to help us coordinate this project with some of our other repairs, and aside from some weather delays stuck to it pretty well overall.

We could not have asked for a better team than Plum ProExteriors for our siding and window project. From start to finish, the process went smoothly. At our initial meeting, Yuk did a great job of explaining all of the different options available for our project. He then provided us with a very detailed estimate that gave us the confidence that there would not be any hidden/surprise costs/fees, which there were not. Once the contract was signed, Yuk did a great job of communicating when the project would start.

Yuk and the crew at Plum ProExteriors did an excellent job installing 7 Pella Architectural double-hung windows in my 1911 Dutch Colonial. Prior to providing a proposal, Yuk measured not once but twice to ensure the windows fit perfectly. Two of three windows were part of a bay window where the frames were no longer perfectly square. None the less, the crew got the windows to fit without issue. They finished with caulking any gaps inside and out for all the windows and finished the job in one day. The crew was clean and neat and even took away the old storm window frames. I already have received compliments on how well the windows look. Their price was fair and I would definitely hire Plum ProExteriors again. Thanks guys!

Yuk is definitely an A+. I felt very comfortable with him and trusted throughout the entire process. We ran into a few issues along the way and that’s to be expected, but Yuk was always available and made good on his promises. If I had to criticize one thing it would be that he doesn’t have a great carpenter for interior finish work, but in fairness he did make me aware that this was not something his crew normally does. Love the end product and the neighbors do too!

We have a full house of windows to replace and we are so happy we found Yuk thanks to a recommendation on a local Facebook group. Yuk quoted the entire job and was transparent in his pricing. Yuk was patient walking us through the process and updating quotes when we decided to start only with the largest and least efficient windows.

I hired Plum ProExteriors based on the quality of work I saw when I came across a renovation project they were doing in the area. I had roof, windows, doors, siding and decking done.I was very impressed with the depth of knowledge Yuk has in his trade. Communication was excellent. He kept me updated on the progress when I wasn’t there. Yuk and his crew worked efficiently and more importantly the quality of work was exceptional.

Plum ProExteriors tailors solutions according to each project’s specifications.

What is the best underlayment for Hardie board siding?

The best underlayment for Hardie siding is a drainable house wrap or a rainscreen system. Both enable effective moisture drainage and ventilation of the facade. These systems meet James Hardie’s recommendations for moisture management and long-term performance. Plum ProExteriors installs solutions that meet the manufacturer’s requirements and are suited to the Massachusetts climate.

How much does siding underlayment installation cost?

The final cost of siding underlayment installation can only be determined after a detailed assessment of the condition of the house and the exterior cladding system. The price depends on the type of siding, the scope of work, the condition of the walls, the moisture level, and whether insulation is required. Plum ProExteriors provides an on-site assessment to generate an accurate and transparent estimate with no hidden costs.
