We start with a layout that fits your yard, your entry doors, and how you actually use the space, then build it. Our deck installation services cover footings, framing, decking, railings, and stairs.

When the existing framing, ledger, or other structural components are no longer worth saving, we remove the old deck and rebuild the structure from the foundation up as needed.
    Decking Materials
Decking Materials for Maine’s Freeze-Thaw Climate

Compare composite, traditional wood, and Brazilian Ipe. Maine winters swing between deep freezes and thaws, and coastal air adds salt and damp on top. Each decking material handles that differently – here is how three popular decking options hold up, season after season.

    Composite
    Composite

Composite decking is a practical choice for Maine homeowners who want a polished look with less seasonal upkeep. Unlike traditional wood, it doesn’t require routine sanding, staining, or sealing. Composite decking from brands such as Trex and TimberTech is made to handle moisture, fading, stains, and everyday use while maintaining a consistent appearance.

    Wood

Wood decking brings a natural, traditional feel that works especially well with Maine homes, cabins, and wooded properties. Pressure-treated lumber and cedar offer warm color and visible grain, and both can be stained, painted, or sealed to match the home’s exterior.

    Wood
    Brazilian Ipe
    Brazilian Ipe

It’s a premium hardwood for homeowners seeking a dense, long-lasting deck with a distinctive, high-end finish. Its rich brown coloring and tight natural grain create a refined appearance that pairs well with both modern homes and more traditional New England architecture. Ipe is a strong option for decks designed for frequent use and long-term outdoor exposure.

    Deck Designs

Deck Designs for Different Maine Properties

How the right deck changes with your home, site, and surroundings. Every property asks something different from a deck. A year-round family home, a cottage you open in May, and a house perched on a hillside each need their own footprint, height, and railing plan. We design around your site, your view, and the way you actually live outside.

    Year-round family homes

    Year-round family homes

These decks work every day of the year, so we plan for real traffic: wide stairs, generous grilling zones, door thresholds that clear snow, and railings sized for kids and pets. Layouts keep a path to the driveway and the shed open all winter.
    Coastal and lakeside seasonal properties

    Coastal and lakeside seasonal properties

Salt air, open winds, and long, closed-up winters call for elevated framing and low-maintenance surfaces. For seasonal homes, the goal is a deck that asks for as little catch-up maintenance as possible when you return in spring. Pairing ones with siding services in Maine protects the whole elevation.
    Multi-level and sloped-lot builds

    Multi-level and sloped-lot builds

Ledge, steep grades, and walkout basements are common here. We step the deck down in tiers, place footings to suit the soil and rock we find, and lay out stair runs and landings so the lower yard stays usable instead of stranded below the house.

    Exteriors Are All We Do

    Exteriors Are All We Do

Our crews work outside every day, year-round. That focus means we know how a deck ledger meets siding, how flashing sheds water, and how to leave your home’s exterior tighter than we found it.

    Permits and Code Handled

    Permits and Code Handled

Where permits are required, we handle the application process, prepare the necessary project information, and coordinate required inspections.

    Footings Set for Maine Frost

    Footings Set for Maine Frost

Frost heave ruins decks that were never dug deep enough. We set footings below the local frost depth and size them for your soil and span, so that posts stay plumb through freeze-thaw cycles rather than lifting each spring.

We had a great experience with Plum Pro overall. Yuk was very professional and well-organized while working with us on a proposal and contract to fix our deck after it was severely damaged by a fallen tree. He set us up with an accelerated timeline to help us coordinate this project with some of our other repairs, and aside from some weather delays stuck to it pretty well overall.

We could not have asked for a better team than Plum ProExteriors for our siding and window project. From start to finish, the process went smoothly. At our initial meeting, Yuk did a great job of explaining all of the different options available for our project. He then provided us with a very detailed estimate that gave us the confidence that there would not be any hidden/surprise costs/fees, which there were not. Once the contract was signed, Yuk did a great job of communicating when the project would start.

Yuk and the crew at Plum ProExteriors did an excellent job installing 7 Pella Architectural double-hung windows in my 1911 Dutch Colonial. Prior to providing a proposal, Yuk measured not once but twice to ensure the windows fit perfectly. Two of three windows were part of a bay window where the frames were no longer perfectly square. None the less, the crew got the windows to fit without issue. They finished with caulking any gaps inside and out for all the windows and finished the job in one day. The crew was clean and neat and even took away the old storm window frames. I already have received compliments on how well the windows look. Their price was fair and I would definitely hire Plum ProExteriors again. Thanks guys!

Yuk is definitely an A+. I felt very comfortable with him and trusted throughout the entire process. We ran into a few issues along the way and that’s to be expected, but Yuk was always available and made good on his promises. If I had to criticize one thing it would be that he doesn’t have a great carpenter for interior finish work, but in fairness he did make me aware that this was not something his crew normally does. Love the end product and the neighbors do too!

We have a full house of windows to replace and we are so happy we found Yuk thanks to a recommendation on a local Facebook group. Yuk quoted the entire job and was transparent in his pricing. Yuk was patient walking us through the process and updating quotes when we decided to start only with the largest and least efficient windows.

I hired Plum ProExteriors based on the quality of work I saw when I came across a renovation project they were doing in the area. I had roof, windows, doors, siding and decking done.I was very impressed with the depth of knowledge Yuk has in his trade. Communication was excellent. He kept me updated on the progress when I wasn’t there. Yuk and his crew worked efficiently and more importantly the quality of work was exceptional.

Frequently Asked Questions About Decks in Maine

What affects the cost of a new deck or deck replacement?

Size, material, height above grade, stairs, and railing choices drive most of the price. Composite costs more up front than pressure-treated wood but asks far less of you later. We price each build after a site visit, and the estimate is free.

What affects the schedule for building a deck?

Permit review at your town office, footing and framing inspections, material lead times, and Maine weather all shape the calendar. We map the sequence before demolition starts and keep you posted at each stage, so you always know what comes next.

Do you handle permits and code compliance for deck builds in Maine?

Yes. Where your municipality requires permits or inspections, we can coordinate the permitting process and required project documentation. Because requirements vary by town, we confirm the applicable process for your property before construction begins.

Is wood or composite decking better for Maine’s climate?

Both perform when built right. Composite and PVC shrug off freeze-thaw cycles and coastal salt air with very little upkeep. Cedar and pressure-treated wood cost less and look traditional, but plan on cleaning and re-sealing on a regular cycle

Can you repair or replace an old or aging deck?

Yes. If the framing, ledger, and footings are sound, we can swap out the decking, rebuild the stairs, and update the railings. When rot reaches the structure, or a footing has heaved above frost depth, a full rebuild is the safer, better-value route.

What signs mean my deck needs repair or replacement?

Spongy boards, wobbly railings, rusted or missing fasteners, soft rot at post bases, and a deck pulling away from the house. Bouncy framing or a lifted footing points to structural work – have it looked at before the next winter.
