    Siding in Boston

Siding in Boston: Installation, Replacement, and Painting

Every job starts the same way – a walkthrough of your goals, your home’s design, and the condition of what’s already on the walls. From there, we handle three kinds of work for Boston homeowners. Explore our siding services.

    Siding installation

    Siding installation

For new builds, additions, and homes going from bare sheathing to a finished exterior, we measure, prep, and install to spec. Corners, seams, and trim transitions line up with the design we agreed on, so the finished wall looks intentional from the street.
    Siding replacement

    Siding replacement

When panels are cracked, warped, or trapping moisture, we tear off the old exterior, inspect the sheathing underneath, and repair what we find before anything new goes up. Clean removal, tidy disposal, and a wall that’s ready for New England weather.
    Siding painting

    Siding painting

Sometimes the walls are sound, and the color is simply tired. We wash and prep the surface, address problem spots and loose caulk, then repaint in the shade you pick – a straightforward refresh that brings back curb appeal without a full rebuild.
    Siding Materials
    Siding Materials for Boston Homes

Six exterior materials built for New England weather. Boston siding takes a beating from nor’easters, salt air, and constant freeze-thaw cycles. Compare the six siding materials we install to find the right fit for your home.

    Fiber cement
    Fiber cement

Built for demanding New England weather, fiber cement siding withstands wind-driven rain, moisture, and freeze-thaw cycles without warping or swelling. It also offers excellent fire resistance and long-lasting color and paint performance. Explore our James Hardie siding installation services.

    Vinyl siding

Low-maintenance vinyl won’t rot and never needs painting. Properly selected and installed panels are designed to withstand demanding wind loads, while through-color construction helps make everyday scratches and scuffs less noticeable.

    Vinyl siding
    Wood siding
    Wood siding

Cedar clapboard and shingles give older Boston streets their authentic character. Wood breathes well in humidity, but it needs staining or repainting every few years to keep freeze-thaw moisture out of the grain.

    Composite siding

Engineered wood composite offers real grain texture with far more impact resistance than cedar. Treated strands resist swelling from driven rain and hold fasteners tight through a full winter of expansion and contraction.

    Composite siding
    ACRE siding
    ACRE siding

Made from upcycled rice hulls, ACRE delivers the look and workability of wood with strong resistance to water, weather, rot, and pests. It can be cut and shaped with standard woodworking tools, making it especially versatile for detailed siding and trim work.

    Boral / TruExterior siding

Boral TruExterior blends fly ash with polymer to deliver near-zero moisture movement – it can even be installed at ground contact. A smart pick for shaded, damp elevations and detailed trim where freeze-thaw swelling ruins wood.

    Boral / TruExterior siding
    Property Types We Work

    Property Types We Work With

One crew, three very different kinds of buildings As siding contractors in Boston, we adapt to the building in front of us – a century-old triple-decker, a newer single-family, or a mixed-use block. Each comes with its own rules and access. Check out our siding services across Massachusetts.

    Historic homes and triple-deckers

    Historic homes and triple-deckers

Older homes across Jamaica Plain, Brighton, Allston, and East Boston often require extra attention to existing siding profiles, trim details, access, and underlying conditions. We handle the paperwork, match existing profiles and trim details, and keep abutters informed while the crew is on site.
    Newer single-family houses

    Newer single-family houses

Homes built in recent decades across West Roxbury, Roslindale, and Hyde Park need clean lines and a schedule that respects family life. We work elevation by elevation, protect landscaping and plantings, and clear the driveway before we leave each day.
    Commercial and multi-unit buildings

    Commercial and multi-unit buildings

Condo associations, mixed-use blocks, and small commercial properties need to be phased around tenants and business hours. We coordinate access, staging, and board approvals. Just over the river? Siding contractors in Cambridge.

We had a great experience with Plum Pro overall. Yuk was very professional and well-organized while working with us on a proposal and contract to fix our deck after it was severely damaged by a fallen tree. He set us up with an accelerated timeline to help us coordinate this project with some of our other repairs, and aside from some weather delays stuck to it pretty well overall.

We could not have asked for a better team than Plum ProExteriors for our siding and window project. From start to finish, the process went smoothly. At our initial meeting, Yuk did a great job of explaining all of the different options available for our project. He then provided us with a very detailed estimate that gave us the confidence that there would not be any hidden/surprise costs/fees, which there were not. Once the contract was signed, Yuk did a great job of communicating when the project would start.

Yuk and the crew at Plum ProExteriors did an excellent job installing 7 Pella Architectural double-hung windows in my 1911 Dutch Colonial. Prior to providing a proposal, Yuk measured not once but twice to ensure the windows fit perfectly. Two of three windows were part of a bay window where the frames were no longer perfectly square. None the less, the crew got the windows to fit without issue. They finished with caulking any gaps inside and out for all the windows and finished the job in one day. The crew was clean and neat and even took away the old storm window frames. I already have received compliments on how well the windows look. Their price was fair and I would definitely hire Plum ProExteriors again. Thanks guys!

Yuk is definitely an A+. I felt very comfortable with him and trusted throughout the entire process. We ran into a few issues along the way and that’s to be expected, but Yuk was always available and made good on his promises. If I had to criticize one thing it would be that he doesn’t have a great carpenter for interior finish work, but in fairness he did make me aware that this was not something his crew normally does. Love the end product and the neighbors do too!

We have a full house of windows to replace and we are so happy we found Yuk thanks to a recommendation on a local Facebook group. Yuk quoted the entire job and was transparent in his pricing. Yuk was patient walking us through the process and updating quotes when we decided to start only with the largest and least efficient windows.

I hired Plum ProExteriors based on the quality of work I saw when I came across a renovation project they were doing in the area. I had roof, windows, doors, siding and decking done.I was very impressed with the depth of knowledge Yuk has in his trade. Communication was excellent. He kept me updated on the progress when I wasn’t there. Yuk and his crew worked efficiently and more importantly the quality of work was exceptional.

    Boston Siding Questions, Answered

What drives the cost of siding replacement in Boston?

Square footage, the material you pick, how many stories and dormers a crew has to stage around, and whether old siding or rotted sheathing has to come off. Trim, soffit, and window wrap details add to it. A walkthrough gives you a firm number.

Do I need a permit to replace siding in Massachusetts?

Yes. Boston requires a Short-Form permit for siding replacement when no structural changes are involved. Additional permits may be required if the project affects electrical wiring or other building systems. We’ll explain the permitting requirements for your project before work begins.

What warranties come with a new siding installation?

Two kinds apply: a manufacturer’s product warranty for the siding itself and a workmanship warranty for the installation. Coverage varies by product line, so ask for both in writing – we go over the terms with you before any work begins.

Can new siding improve my home’s energy efficiency?

It can. Taking failed siding off lets us seal gaps, add house wrap, and fit insulated backer or foam board behind the panels – the layers that stop drafts moving through old wall cavities. Many owners notice steadier temperatures upstairs in winter.

Are there historic district rules on siding materials in Boston?

In neighborhoods overseen by the city’s landmarks and local historic district commissions, yes. Profile, exposure, and material can all need approval before work starts. We plan around those guidelines and prepare the documentation your commission asks for.

Can siding be installed during a Boston winter?

Yes. Crews work right through New England winters. Vinyl is handled with extra care in cold conditions because panels become brittle, and some sealants require warmer conditions. Cold snaps and storm days can shift the calendar, so we build weather days into the plan.
