Roof, Siding, Windows or Gutters: What Should You Replace First?
When several parts of your home's exterior need attention, the smartest renovation doesn't always start with the most noticeable upgrade. It starts with understanding what your home needs most.
Your roof looks tired. Your siding is aging. The windows feel drafty. And the gutters have seen better days.
So where do you start?
A well-planned exterior remodel should consider more than appearance. Condition, water protection, efficiency, project coordination, budget, and your long-term plans all help determine which project deserves priority.
Start With Anything That Could Let Water In
Protection comes before curb appeal.
Before choosing siding colors or new window styles, look for problems that could allow moisture into your home. Water intrusion can affect far more than the exterior surface where the issue first appears.
So... What Should Come First?
There isn't one answer for every home. The condition of each component should help determine your remodeling order.
Put the Roof First When Protection Is at Risk
Your roof is one of your home's main defenses against rain, snow, wind, and changing New England weather.
Move roofing higher on the list if you notice:
- Missing, cracked, or damaged shingles
- Repeated leaks
- Deteriorated roofing materials
- Interior signs of water
- Severe-weather damage
- An aging roof approaching the end of its service life
Prioritize Siding When Your Exterior Walls Need Help
Siding has a major effect on curb appeal, but it also creates an important protective layer around your home's exterior walls.
Siding may deserve priority when you see:
- Warping or cracking
- Rotting materials
- Loose or missing sections
- Moisture concerns
- Widespread deterioration
- Aging materials with functional problems
Choose Windows When Comfort Is the Bigger Problem
Sometimes the exterior looks fine from the street while your home feels uncomfortable inside.
Window replacement may move up the list when you have:
- Persistent drafts
- Condensation between panes
- Damaged frames
- Windows that are difficult to operate
- Windows that will not close or lock correctly
- Uneven room temperatures
Don't Ignore the System Moving Water Away
Gutters may not be the most exciting part of an exterior remodel, but they serve an important job: directing runoff away from your home.
Pay attention to gutters that are:
- Pulling away from the roofline
- Leaking at seams or joints
- Constantly overflowing
- Sagging
- Damaged
- Sending runoff where it should not go
What's the Best Order for an Exterior Remodel?
Think in terms of priorities—not a rigid one-size-fits-all sequence.
Address Active Damage First
Leaks, rot, moisture intrusion, and structural concerns should take priority over cosmetic improvements.
Protect the Home From the Top Down
If the roofing system requires replacement, it will often become an early priority because it helps protect everything beneath it.
Coordinate Projects That Intersect
Roofing, siding, windows, trim, and gutters interact with one another. Coordinating overlapping projects can reduce unnecessary disruption and help produce a cleaner result.
Plan for the Finished Exterior
Don't make every material decision separately. Think about how your roof, siding, windows, doors, trim, gutters, and other exterior elements should look together when the remodel is complete.
Think Beyond One Project at a Time
Imagine a home with aging siding, drafty windows, an older roof, and gutters that will soon need replacement.
You could treat those as four unrelated projects—or create one long-term exterior remodeling strategy that considers how every project affects the next.
Even when everything isn't completed at once, knowing the final goal can help you make smarter decisions today.
Plan the Full Exterior
- Roofing color
- Siding color
- Siding texture
- Window frames
- Exterior doors
- Trim
- Gutters
- Decking
You Don't Have to Do Everything at Once
If a complete exterior remodel isn't realistic right now, build a phased plan around urgency, budget, and your long-term goals.
Address roofing, leaks, drainage, or other water-management issues that cannot wait.
Replace deteriorated siding and windows based on condition, comfort, and project coordination.
Complete gutters, doors, decks, trim, or additional exterior improvements.
Function First. Curb Appeal Still Matters.
Protecting your home should lead the conversation, but an exterior remodel is also an opportunity to update the entire personality of your property.
Choosing colors, materials, trim, windows, roofing, and other exterior details as part of one design can create a home that feels intentionally renovated—not pieced together project by project.
One Exterior. One Bigger Picture.
At Plum Pro Exteriors, exterior remodeling goes beyond focusing on a single surface. Roofing, siding, windows, doors, decks, and gutters all contribute to how your home looks and performs.
Evaluating those components together can help homeowners create a more thoughtful renovation strategy—whether the home needs one immediate replacement or you're planning a more complete exterior transformation.
The best starting point is understanding what needs attention now, what can wait, and how today's project may affect tomorrow's.
Not Sure Where Your Remodel Should Start?
Start with the part of your home that needs attention most—and build the rest of your exterior plan around protection, coordination, budget, and the finished look you want.
Plan Your ProjectFrequently Asked Questions
Should I replace my roof or siding first?
It depends on their condition. If the roof has active leaks or significant deterioration, it may need to take priority. When both projects are planned, coordinating them as part of the same exterior strategy can be beneficial.
Should windows be replaced before siding?
If both are part of the renovation, they should be planned together. The appropriate installation sequence will depend on the home's condition and the scope of work.
Can I remodel my home's exterior in phases?
Yes. Many homeowners choose to prioritize urgent work first and complete additional exterior upgrades over time.
How do I know which exterior project is most urgent?
Look first for active leaks, moisture intrusion, deterioration, and components that are no longer functioning correctly. A professional exterior evaluation can help establish priorities.
Is it better to plan several exterior projects together?
When several components already need attention, looking at the entire exterior can help with project sequencing, material selections, and creating a cohesive finished design.
